Navigation apps on mobiles have produced stand-alone GPS devices less of a requirement than they ever used to be, but they are still handy to own.

Some Garmin versions have free map updates to life, but also the Nuvi 255 W is not one of these. If you bought yours now, though, you're entitled to a free update so that you're starting with the latest maps. That's less common today that this model has been discontinued for a little while, but they might still crop up on liquidation websites or as clearance items at physical retailers.
To be eligible for the free update, you must register your Nuvi and download the maps within 60 days of the time it powers up and accelerates satellites. Otherwise, you have to purchase a one-time map update or life updates. If you choose the lifetime option, any achievement updates are free from the sense which you don't need to pay each time.

The permanent internal memory of the Nuvi contains its software and the first pair of maps. Still, you won't have the ability to set up additional map collections without updating memory through an SD card. The card slot on the border of the 255W accepts a micro SD card with a capacity of 4GB to 32GB. You will need to install this prior to doing map updates, so if you are entitled to a free update with enrollment, you need to include the SD card prior to starting.
Installing Garmin Express
Garmin updates and downloads typically require the producer's Garmin Express software to update software and maps. Proceed to Garmin's web site and download the Mac or Windows version, based upon your computer. Chromebook or Linux users aren't supported. You may be able to find a workaround, however, it is usually easiest to borrow a harmonious computer periodically for the updates.
Click on the downloaded file to launch the install program and follow the on-screen prompts to register your device and install the program. You will need to click the checkbox saying that you take Garmin's terms of usage. As part of the initial setup, the applications in your 255W are updated to the most current versions. The installer asks you in case you want to get notifications from Garmin. If you take, you're prompted in the long run if there are updates to install.
If you do not have an SD card to give storage for the complete map set, you can choose to download only a specific region instead. This retains the map smaller, but it means you may not have the info you want if you travel outside your normal driving area.

Any map installation will take up to several hours, so don't leave it to the last minute. Ideally, start the installation before bed or before heading out to the day. Garmin Express lets you know as soon as you're able to leave the update to finish by itself.
